The complicated operation to dismantle the Morandi bridge in Genoa, which collapsed six months ago
The removal of a block measuring 36 metres long by 18 metres wide and weighing over 800 tonnes on the 8th marked the start of the demolition operation of the Morandi bridge, which linked cities in northern Italy to southern France and collapsed on 14 August. “This is a very important day, it represents the first step on a path that we hope will be as short as possible,” commented Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The construction of a new viaduct is planned for the site, which should come into operation in early 2020.
The collapse of the bridge, in an industrial area of Genoa, in northern Italy, caused around 35 cars and some trucks to fall from a height of 45 meters. The tragedy killed 43 people.
