After the approval of CoronaVac by the WHO (World Health Organization), the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB) said that he sent letters today to the European Community and to the European Parliament requesting the inclusion of the vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute in partnership with the Chinese Sinovac among the vaccines accepted for the entry of travelers into the bloc.
“I sent letters this morning to the presidents of the European Commission and the European Parliament requesting the inclusion of the Butantan vaccine among the vaccines accepted for travelers to enter the bloc. It is an important measure for the normalization of the flow of people and business between Brazil, especially São Paulo, with the countries of the European community”, said João Doria, according to a publication in UOL.
The Secretary of Economic Development of São Paulo, Patricia Ellen, recalled that everyone who received the Butantan vaccine needed to quarantine upon arriving in European countries. Now, with the approval of the WHO, there is an indication that with the approval, the European Commission will grant approval.
In the document, dated this Tuesday, 1, Doria congratulates European countries for the way they fought the pandemic and states that “in the State of São Paulo, where almost 25% of the Brazilian population lives, we also follow the guidelines of science and medicine in the fight against Covid-19”.
The document also highlights the millions of doses that were produced in São Paulo laboratories and sent to the National Immunization Program. According to the State's Secretary of Economic Development, Patricia Ellen, a series of meetings between Brazilian and foreign businesspeople had appealed to the governor to make connections with Europe.
“A lot of international travel today is limited. Everyone who had the Butantan vaccine, CoronaVac, until now had to quarantine upon arrival in these countries, so for a business trip lasting three or four days, this implied an additional 14 days”, he recalled.
