Smart cities: Italy-Rio meeting debates urban transformations

Last week, the Italian Embassy in Brazil and the Italian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro held the 2nd Research to Business (R2B) Italy-Rio Meeting and discussed, among other topics, the demands for sustainable urban development and smart cities.

The discussions had the capital of Rio de Janeiro at the center of the discussions. “In this way, we can contribute to the sustainable, economic, social and environmental development of this city of Rio de Janeiro and the cities of Rio de Janeiro as a whole, as well as the cities involved in Italy”, said the consul general of Italy in Rio de Janeiro. January, Paolo Miraglia Del Giudice.

The last of the two days of the event was attended by the mayor of Milan , Giuseppe Sala, which recalled the link between the Italian city and the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

“Milan and Rio are laboratory cities for urban transformation policies for sustainability, social inclusion and resilience, where public and private actors work together and confront each other. The development of common projects constitutes a great opportunity to create innovative solutions that allow us to respond to the urban and social challenges of our time”, highlighted the Italian.

In his closing speech, Del Giudice highlighted that he hopes that the legacy of the meeting will be to “help further strengthen the historic collaboration” between the two countries and that it will generate “conditions to concretely carry out new and important cooperation projects”.

The scientific attaché of the Italian Embassy in Brazil, Fábio Naro, also praised the strengthening of the bond between the two nations and presented data that highlight international cooperation.

Among the numbers presented, Brazil is Italy's 5th largest academic partner and that there are more than 190 Brazilian projects presented after the last call from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for joint research projects.

“Together, these data clearly indicate that Italy and Italian cities can be natural partners for Brazilian municipalities in the knowledge-based economy, sharing experience, opportunities and, most importantly, intelligent people with a high level of education”, highlighted Naro. (Handle)
