The municipality of Guimarães, in northern Portugal, has announced an investment in free Italian language training for tourism professionals. The initiative aims to improve customer service and attract a growing number of visitors from Italy.

The city government's decision is based on a participatory assessment conducted with local partners. The study revealed the importance of improving language skills to better accommodate foreign visitors.

The program focuses on practical communication for everyday professional life. Students will learn greetings, phonetics, essential vocabulary, numbers, and sentence construction for real-life customer service situations.

Registration is free and must be done through the Portuguese Tourism Digital Academy portal. Certification will be granted to participants who register at least 90 percent attendance.

With this move, Guimarães aims to raise the standard of its tourism offerings. The focus is on ensuring that the Portuguese city is prepared to serve the international market, especially the Italian market, with excellence.

Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities in Portugal, and its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
