The city of Rovigo, in the Veneto region, has the best coffee in Italy, according to a ranking released by the “Instituto Espresso Italiano (IEI)” this Friday (2).
According to experts, the best cup of coffee in the country can be drunk at the “Baribal” bar, run by the Italian Nico Bregolin, winner of the barista competition held in Milan, the “Espresso Italiano Champion 2022”.
At 43 years old, the Italian has been running his restaurant for 19 years and was awarded the title of best espresso and cappuccino professional.
In the competition, held in Piazza Duomo, Bregolin managed to calibrate his equipment – an Evo 2 machine and a coffee grinder – preparing four espressos and four cappuccinos in just 11 minutes.

The cups were analyzed by a pair of technical judges and a panel of sensory evaluators. The tasting took place blindly, without anyone knowing who the coffees on the table belonged to.
The competing products reflected IEI's quality parameters: for espresso, a cup with around 25 milliliters of coffee decorated with a thick cream with a very fine texture, hazelnut color, syrup with intense aromas and rich notes of flowers, fruit , chocolate and toasted bread. As for the cappuccino, an equally fine and shiny cream, with a perfect balance of milk and coffee aromas.
“After a forced three-year break, we are back with our barista competition, created to enhance a fundamental profession for Italian hospitality. The Italian espresso and cappuccino, despite globalization, continue to be the symbol of the Italian spirit and our mission is to increase the quality of the cup and of those who work behind the counter every day to obtain it”, said the president of IEI, Luigi Morello.
