City had 30 inhabitants and lost two during the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic
The municipality of Morterone, which has less than 30 inhabitants and is the least populous in Italy, this week registered her first birth in eight years.
Little Denis came into the world last Sunday (19), weighing 2,6 kilos, and is the son of Sara, a 21-year-old who lives in the city, and Matteo, 32, resident of neighboring Varenna, with 730 inhabitants.
The maternal grandparents of Morterone's 29th resident run a restaurant in the village, which sits on the outskirts of Lake Como, 90 kilometers north of Milan. The last birth in the municipality was registered in 2012.
“It’s a true community joy”, celebrated Mayor Antonella Invernizzi, quoted by the newspaper Corriere dela Sera. The city, like many others in Italy, is fighting against population loss and has seen its number of inhabitants reduce by almost 25% in five years.
We also pack any lost two residents during the coronavirus pandemic SARS-CoV-2.
