Decision was taken unanimously by the Sarno city council
Taking advantage of “25 Aprile”, a commemorative date in Italy for liberation from Nazi-fascism, the mayor of Sarno, Giuseppe Canfora, decided to revoke Benito Mussolini's honorary citizenship.
The decision, reported this Thursday, April 25, was taken unanimously by the city council. Sarno has around 31 thousand inhabitants and is in the province of Salerno, in the Campania region.
“According to many historians, Mussolini was considered the political mastermind of the cowardly attack against Giovanni Amendola, of Sarno origin. Honorary citizenship, granted at the time, is currently incompatible with the values of the city of Sarno and our community,” said the mayor.
Citizenship was granted to the Italian politician on May 23, 1923, a time when Mussolini led the National Fascist Party.
On the other hand, Giovanni Amendola was an Italian journalist and politician, a well-known opponent of Fascism.
“We cannot be the city of Giovanni Amendola and have an honorary citizen ordering his murder”, said Mayor Canfora.
