Initiative provides 18 months of financial support for those who give up on abortion
The town of Iseo, in northern Italy, approved a proposal with which it intends to establish a bonus of 160 euros – approximately R$1.050 per month – to women who give up on abortion and decide to give birth.
With just over 9 thousand inhabitants in province of Brescia, Iseo – like Italy – suffers from the drop in birth rates.
Voted and approved at the end of September this year, according to a publication by Brescia Today, the motion “Support for nascent life“, defined as “maternity benefit” gives the woman a grant of 160 euros for 18 months, totaling 2.880 euros – around R$7.500.
"It's a hymn to life in all its forms, therefore as a support and a structure to be implemented precisely so that nascent life is increasingly encouraged and, instead, forms that lead to different solutions are discouraged”, said councilor Giovanna Prati (M5S), author of the project.
The document – a kind of political speech against abortion – was approved by the center-right majority in Iseo. The opposition did not participate in the vote as a form of protest.
Em Roma, Senator Monica Cirinnà (PD) harshly criticized the initiative with the following words: “The choice to be a mother or not cannot be bought".
Anti-abortion city
In 2017, Iseo made headlines in the main Italian newspapers due to the case of the Mellino Mellini hospital, where there were no abortions for 15 years. Doctors, anesthetists and nurses were against the practice.
Since 1978, Italy has had the “Law 194, on abortion”, which allows women, in the foreseen cases, to use the public service to terminate their pregnancy.
