The Italian Association Movement Abroad will present this Wednesday, November 19th, a proposed law that aims to amend aspects of Italian citizenship legislation. The event is scheduled for 19 pm (Rome time) in the Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome.
The text was submitted by Congressman Franco Tirelli, elected in South America. The presentation will include Tirelli, the president of MAIE, Ricardo Merlo, Senator Mario Borghese, and the coordinator of the movement for the Americas, Antonio Iachini.
According to the statement released, the proposal foresees significant changes to citizenship by right of blood. The full content has not yet been officially published, and the movement has not detailed which provisions it intends to alter.
According to information obtained by Italianismo, the proposal only grants jus sanguinis (right of blood) up to the second generation and requires a certificate of proficiency in the Italian language (level B1) for subsequent generations. There is no official confirmation on these points. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAIE) has not released any excerpt from the text presented to Parliament.
Wednesday's conference should provide the first formal explanations to Italians abroad, directly from the authors of the project. Until then, there are no public details about the practical impact of the measures.
