Brazilians are among the ten nationalities in the world that have obtained the most citizenship from European Union in 2022. There were 25,9 thousand concessions, an increase of 26% compared to the previous year. Of this total, almost 70% of citizenships were obtained in Italy and Portugal.
On the list of beneficiaries, Brazil appears in seventh place, among nations whose citizens emigrated because of wars, internal conflicts or economic difficulties. It is also alongside countries with geographical proximity to the EU borders. In addition to Brazil, the list includes Morocco, Syria, Albania, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, India, Moldova and Russia.
The data was released by Eurostat, the bloc's statistics institute, and is the most recent available.
Brazil's numbers were boosted by Italy. In 2022, the Italian government granted or recognized 11,2 citizenships to Brazilians, more than double the previous year.
Eurostat data does not reveal how citizenships are obtained. At the request of the report, Istat (Italian statistics institute) identified the modalities of the requests that had Brazilians benefiting. It is mainly due to the right of blood (jus sanguinis, in Latin, as it is called) that they also become Italians. In 2022, 83% of citizenships were recognized following this criterion.
Currently, Italian legislation, from 1992, recognizes citizenship by blood without limit of generations. The estimate is that there are 30 million descendants in Brazil, as a consequence of the mass emigration that occurred between 1870 and 1920, when 1,4 million Italians entered the country.
The Italian Parliament, however, began to analyze a bill from a governing party that limits obtaining citizenship without the need to live in the country to the third generation (great-grandchildren), as long as it is proven that the applicant speaks the Italian language. There is still no forecast for a plenary vote.
If the relationship exceeds the third generation, if the proposal is approved, you will need to live for at least one year in Italy, before submitting the application in the city where you reside. In all cases, a certificate of knowledge of the language, with an intermediate level, would be required. (Sheet/Photo: Depositphotos)
