The Brazilian National Driving License (CNH) will now be accepted to obtain the equivalent Italian document, starting this Saturday (13/01/18). The measure stems from an agreement between the two countries and came into force after being published in the Official Gazette of the Union on Thursday. The Brazilian National Driving License (CNH) will now be accepted to obtain the equivalent Italian document. The measure results from an agreement between the two countries and came into force after being published in the Official Gazette of Thursday. Italians will also be able to do the same in relation to their license in Brazil.
As a result, drivers will not need to undergo tests or exams when applying for the document in another country. The order can be placed from Saturday (13). The rule applies to licenses in Brazilian categories A and B, except in cases of special conditions, such as those requiring adaptation of the vehicle and the use of a prosthesis.
Another restriction is that the conversion request without exam or test is not valid for holders of a provisional driver's license, and must be made within four years of residing in the foreign country.
According to the measure, the driver's license of Brazilians residing in the European country will no longer be valid for circulation after one year of obtaining the residence permit in Italy. For Italians, their document will lose its validity 180 days after entering Brazil.
The driver's license can be accepted in all countries that are part of the Vienna Convention. Brazil also has specific agreements with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Spain and Mozambique, according to the Ministry of Cities.
In the case of temporary trips, the recommendation is to contact the Italian authorities to find out if it is allowed to drive using a Brazilian driver's license or an International Driving Permit.
