The historical ties between Calabria and Brazil were strengthened in two events held in the cities of Rossano and Morano Calabro, Italy. The initiatives, known as twinning — or city twinning — were organized by the Italy-Brazil parliamentary group, chaired by deputy Fabio Porta, with the collaboration of Italian and Brazilian authorities.
In Rossano Calabro, a town famous for the Madonna Achiropita, the partnership celebrated the religious festival of San Paolo, which turns 100 this year. In Morano Calabro, the brotherhood with Porto Alegre, in Brazil, which is home to a significant community of descendants of Moranese emigrants, was renewed.
“With the Italy-Brazil parliamentary friendship group, the cultural administrations of Rossano and Morano, the province of Cosenza, the Region of Calabria and the Diocese of Rossano, we involved civil society and Italian and Brazilian communities to bring to life a twinning 4.0, capable of generating positive impacts for everyone involved”, stated Porta.
Diplomacy and international cooperation
The celebrations brought together city halls, provinces, regions and civil society representatives from both countries. Porta highlighted the importance of partnerships:
“I was in Calabria for two beautiful initiatives of twinning: in Rossano Calabro, city of Madonna Achiropita, ideally linked to the popular and religious festival of San Paolo, which this year celebrates 100 years; and in Morano Calabro, twins for years with Porto Alegre, where there is a strong Moranese community”, declared the deputy.
The event was also attended by Ernesto Rapani, a Calabrian senator and co-organizer of the initiatives, as well as mayors Flavio Stasi (Rossano) and Mario Donadio (Morano). Diplomatic representatives such as Renato Mosca, Brazil's ambassador to Italy, and Valerio Caruso, Italian consul general in Porto Alegre, were also present.
Porta also thanked Nicodemo Misiti for his support in projects involving Calabria and Santa Catarina, and Professor Giuseppe Sommario, responsible for the scientific coordination of the initiatives.
