Brazilians who live or are passing through Italy can count on Brazilian consulates to obtain support in a variety of situations, from medical emergencies to issuing documents.
The Brazilian consular network in the country is made up of Embassy in Rome and by the consulates general in Milan and Rome. There are also honorary consulates with limited functions in cities such as Veneza, Naples, Genoa, Florence and Turin.
These posts offer services aimed at the Brazilian community, especially in cases of emergency, legal issues, civil registration and guidance on returning to Brazil.
Emergency support
If a Brazilian is the victim of an accident, hospitalization or violence, consulates can provide immediate assistance. This includes communication with family members, support with local authorities and guidance on how to proceed.
In the event of death, they assist with the documentation required for transfer or burial in Italy.
Legal aid and arrests
Consulates monitor the cases of Brazilians in detention, ensuring that they have access to legal counsel and are treated in accordance with Italian law. They can also inform family members and attend hearings when necessary.
However, they do not offer direct legal defense or pay for lawyers.
Documents and civil records
Consulates issue documents such as:
- Authorization for travel by minors
- Public powers of attorney
- Birth, marriage or death registration of Brazilians abroad
- Passports (renewal, issuance or replacement due to loss)
In case of loss of passport, the consulate can issue a replacement. Authorization to Return to Brazil (ARB), valid only for immediate return.
Vote abroad
Brazilians over the age of 18 who reside in Italy and have a regular status with the consulate can vote in the presidential elections. Voter registration, change of address and issuance of the voter registration card must be done via e-Title or through the TSE system.
Voluntary return to Brazil
In cases of vulnerability, consulates analyze requests for support for voluntary return to Brazil. Granting depends on technical criteria and availability of resources.
There is no ongoing direct financial assistance — but in exceptional situations, it is possible to apply for emergency assistance, such as temporary accommodation or food.
