President Jair Bolsonaro wants to “extend” his trip to Poland and Hungary, exponents of the right in Europe and with whom he wants to establish a conservative alliance, to fulfill his personal desire to get to know the land of his ancestors.
Of Italian descent, he intends, between April and May, to visit the region of Lucca, in Tuscany, where his grandparents came from.
In a conversation with O Estado last Wednesday, Bolsonaro jokingly said that he would like to meet the “mafiosos” of the family. “It is the mission of the Itamaraty to set a date for Poland. We will do Hungary and, perhaps, Italy. (I want) Stay for a couple of days in Italy. Meeting the mobsters in my family,” he said, laughing, when referring to the criminal organization.
Without contact with his relatives in Italy, the president's expectation is to discover other Bolzonaros, with a “z” in the Italian spelling, who live there. His ancestors arrived at the end of the 19th century and settled in the interior of São Paulo, where they worked on coffee farms. “I’ve never been to Italy. (The origin of the family) It's the Lucca region, I don't know it. I want to go and meet some Bolsonaro”, said the president.
After the deportation of former Italian activist Cesare Battisti, in January last year, Bolsonaro told Italy's RAI channel that he would like to participate in the celebrations on May 8, which celebrates the Allies' Victory Day in World War II. – Italy, which fought alongside Germany, surrendered in 2. He also said he wanted to go to Lucca.
At the time, the city's mayor, Alessandro Tambellini, from the center-left Democratic Party, stated that Bolsonaro would be received with respect, but highlighted: “His political ideas are not ours”.
Dilma and Temer went to discover their origins
The custom of politicians knowing their origins has become tradition. In October 2011, Dilma Rousseff visited Gábrovo, in Bulgaria, where her father was born. Michel Temer was in Btaaboura, Lebanon, his family's hometown, in May 2016.
Editor's note: At the request of Italianismo, the Blessed Citizenship, company specialized in searching and preparing documents for the citizenship process, found the birth record of Vittorio Bolzonaro – great-grandfather of President Bolsonaro –, born in Anguillara Veneta, in Padua. With around 4.700 inhabitants, the city is administered by mayor Luigi Polo, from the Democratic Party (left-wing).

According to the birth book, Vittorio Bolzonaro was born on Via Canareggio. See what the avenue currently looks like on the map below:
