The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, highlighted this Thursday (14) that the “absolute priority” of the Italian government is to increase the number of births in the country, which has been facing a series of negative birth records.
Meloni's statement came during a congress on demography held in Budapest, promoted by Hungary's conservative prime minister, Viktor Orbán. The event also served as a stage to defend family values.
The prime minister emphasized the need for a “great battle to defend families”, adding that this implies the defense of identity, religious values and all the elements that contributed to the construction of Italian civilization.
In 2022, Italy recorded only 393 thousand births, the lowest number in its history. Studies indicate that the country could lose up to 20% of its population in the next 50 years if the current trend of low birth rates persists.
Giorgia Meloni emphasized that the demographic issue is crucial and not just one of several national concerns. She warned that future projections are alarming and attributed part of this trend to the emergence of a supposed feeling “anti-family” in recent years.
