Results are among the most promising therapies to combat the new coronavirus
Synthetic antibodies managed to neutralize the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus in mammalian cell cultures in a study carried out by three Italian universities.
So-called monoclonal antibodies are laboratory versions of those produced by the immune system to combat an invading antigen and are among the most promising therapies to combat the new coronavirus.
Conducted by the University of Toronto, Canada, the study was based on three synthetic antibodies designed on the computer to render the spike protein, used by Sars-CoV-2 to attack human cells, harmless.
The result is still awaiting publication in a scientific journal, but one of the research participants says that neutralizing the virus “it worked very well".
"Contacts are underway to produce doses for clinical trials, which could take place in a few months," Italian scientist Giuseppe Novelli, from the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, told ANSA.
The University of Turin and the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute, the leading reference in infectious diseases in Italy, also participated in the study.
“Academic research has fulfilled its duty, and now it is up to the industry to produce doses of the medicine for experimentation,” he added.
