The films “Still Here”, by Walter Salles, and “Vermiglio”, by Maura Delpero, were announced among the nominees for the Golden Globe in the category of best foreign language film.
The announcement was made this Monday (9) by actors Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut and also includes “All We Imagine Light”, by Payal Kapadia; “Emilia Perez”, by Jacques Audiard; “The Girl With The Needle”, by Magnus von Horn; and “The Seed Of The Sacred Fig”, by Mohammad Rasoulof, in the running for the same award.
With the biggest box office since the pandemic, Salles' Brazilian production shows a woman's fight against the military dictatorship and even won the award for Best Screenplay at the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival, in Italy.
“I'm Still Here” tells the story of Eunice Paiva (played by Fernanda Torres in her youth and Fernanda Montenegro in her old age), mother of five children whose life was turned upside down after the kidnapping, arrest and disappearance of her husband, former congressman Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), by the military regime.
Torres' performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes. With this, she becomes the second Brazilian to be nominated for a Golden Globe award, the first being her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, 95, who was nominated for her work in the film “Central Station” 25 years ago.
The Brazilian actress will compete for the award alongside big names in Hollywood, such as Angelina Jolie, for the film “Maria”; Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”); Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”), Tilda Swinton (“The Room Next Door”) and Kate Winslet (“Lee”).
In a post on social media, Torres acknowledged the nomination while getting ready for a screening of the film in London. “Guys, I’m nominated for a Golden Globe! I’m here at Glam, with [my makeup artist] Rebeca, in London. There’s a screening here today…it’s crazy.”
“Kisses, unbelievable! And Walter, 25 years after him with my mother… life really is worth it. Kisses!”, he celebrates.
In addition to Brazil, Italy is also on the list of nominations. The film “Vermiglio”, winner of the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize at the last Venice Film Festival – and Italy’s official candidate for the 2025 Oscar, is in the running for the award for best foreign language film, telling a rural story set in the Dolomites, on the border with Austria, during the Second World War.
In 1944, the arrival of a wounded soldier in remote Vermiglio shakes up the quiet life of a teacher and his family, after his eldest daughter falls in love and decides to marry the stranger.
In turn, “Challengers”, by Luca Guadagnino, will compete in the categories of Best Comedy or Musical and Best Soundtrack, while the Italian Isabella Rosselini will compete in the category of Best Supporting Actress, for her performance in “Conclave”.
In this edition, the musical “Emilia Pérez”, by Jacques Audiard, became the second most nominated film in the history of the awards, behind only Nashville (1975), by Robert Altman, with 10 nominations. “Wicked”, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, received four.
The Golden Globes awards ceremony will be held on the first Sunday of 2025, January 5, at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
