Although Brazil and Italy renewed the agreement on mutual recognition of driver's licenses in July, during the visit of Italian president Sergio Mattarella to Brazil, the process of implementing the agreement faces new obstacles. The ratification of the agreement by the Brazilian Congress is still necessary, postponing the expected benefits for Brazilian drivers residing in Italy.
Fabio Porta requests urgent approval of the agreement
The Italian deputy Fabio Porta expressed frustration with the delay in implementing the agreement, which would allow Brazilian drivers to convert their National Driver's License (CNH) into an Italian license without the need for new exams. The benefit would apply to those who have resided in Italy for less than six years and hold a valid CNH.
“It is not fair to make thousands of people, especially workers, wait even longer for the approval of this renewal,” said Porta. According to him, the president of the Brazil-Italy parliamentary friendship group, Eros Biondini, has already been called to ask the Brazilian Congress to approve the agreement urgently.
Porta also highlighted that, while the ratification process is not completed, Brazilians who already benefited from the previous agreement should be able to continue driving in Italy.
“Despite the frustration of many who believed that the agreement would come into effect immediately after the renewal was signed, including people like me who dedicated themselves with great determination to quickly achieving this result, we must recognize this additional institutional step,” Porta explained. He emphasized the need for quick action to avoid further harm to thousands of Brazilian drivers and workers.
Porta also asked the Italian government that, while the ratification process is underway, drivers who had already obtained the conversion of their licenses under the previous agreement continue to drive in Italy, without new restrictions.
