According to a SWG survey, 4 out of 5 citizens do not want to go to the polls due to fears related to the coronavirus and Italy's recovery plan.
Many blame Renzi for the crisis, which remains at 3% popularity. Lega is the first party with 23,5% of the votes, followed by the Democratic Party with 19,6%, according to the newspaper La Repubblica.
As for the former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, the opening of the government crisis does not affect its popularity at the moment.
And even those who are not enthusiastic about his work would prefer him to remain in charge of the country anyway. In short, this is the image illustrated at AdnKronos by the researcher Maurizio Pessi, vice president of SWG.
80% of Italians do not want to vote
“Certainly, in public opinion, the call for political stability prevails by far, although obviously not everyone loves Conte's government. But 80% of Italians are against early elections”, reports Pessi.
According to him, concerns about the coronavirus and possible setbacks in organizing vaccine distribution are some of the factors. “Somewhat due to fears related to their activities in the case of those who work on their own, especially in the business, commerce, food, tourism sectors, fearing even greater economic losses from a crisis that would question even the Recovery Plan and, therefore, the European funds to help the country”, says Pessi.
Conte does not lose popularity
Furthermore, “the majority of Italians still consider Conte’s performance to be good.” The prime minister did not lose popularity after the start of the government crisis. “The fault is not his and his actions, but the political movements decided by Matteo Renzi".
“Obviously it does not mean that all those who call for stability would vote for Conte or the center-left in the elections. Many are ready to vote for the center-right, but not now”, says Pessi.
Now, “Italians are asking us to move forward, without early elections, to face the health and economic emergencies. Even though few are convinced that a new political balance can last two years, until the natural end of the legislature”, adds the SWG vice-president.
