6 reasons to visit Treviso before it becomes popular

Nicknamed “little Venice”, Treviso may not be as well-known as its neighbour, but its popularity has grown in recent years.

Treviso, often overshadowed by its neighbor Veneza, has been gaining more and more prominence. Known as “little Venice”, the city in the interior of Veneto offers an authentic Italian experience, with fewer tourists and more tranquility.

In 2023, tourism in Treviso increased by 24%, according to regional data. Its picturesque canals, charming architecture and culinary traditions attract the attention of many visitors.

Check out six reasons to visit this gem before it becomes a crowded destination.

1. Birthplace of tiramisu

Treviso is the birthplace of the famous tiramisù, the classic Italian dessert made with layers of mascarpone and coffee. The dish was created in 1972 at the restaurant Le Beccherie, after years of experimentation between Alba Campeol and chef Roberto 'Loli' Linguanotto, recently deceased.

Today, tiramisu is one of the most famous desserts in the world, ranking fifth on the Taste Atlas's list of the 100 best. In October, the city hosts the Tiramisu World Cup, attracting competitors from all over the world.

2. Piazza dei Signori

The beating heart of Treviso is the Piazza dei Signori, the city's main square, where residents meet to socialize.

Overlooking the square is the Trecento Palace, a 13th-century building that houses the town hall and features Venetian frescoes.

Same damaged during World War II, the palace maintains its grandeur and historical charm.

3. Treviso Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle is one of the main historical landmarks of Treviso.

Originally built in the 11th century, it was rebuilt in the 18th century inspired by ancient Roman temples.

The Duomo houses masterpieces such as “The Annunciation” by Tiziano Vecellio, and “Adoration of the Magi”, by Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis.

4. Fountain of the Tits

One of the most curious monuments in Treviso is the Fontana delle Tette.

Built in 1559 after a severe drought, the statue of a woman squeezing her breasts gushed wine to celebrate the election of new mayors.

Today, the fountain spews water, but it remains a symbol of the city's eccentric past.

5. Local Prosecco

Treviso is located near Valdobbiadene, a region famous for the production of prosecco, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just a 30-minute drive from the city, wineries offer tours and tastings.

There is no shortage of bars in the center of Treviso to enjoy a good prosecco, accompanied by the traditional cicchetti, small Italian tapas.

6. Walk along the walls

For those who enjoy walking, Treviso offers a walk along its Renaissance walls, built at the beginning of the 16th century.

The five-kilometer route around the city offers beautiful views of the canals and is a pleasant way to explore local history.

These attractions, combined with Treviso's peaceful charm, make the city an unmissable destination for those who want to experience authentic Italy, without the hustle and bustle of large crowds.
