The 52th edition of Feast of San Gennaro will begin this Saturday, September 6th, at Mooca neighborhood, in São Paulo. The program runs until October 5th, every weekend, and is expected to attract thousands of visitors seeking typical Italian cuisine, cultural attractions, and moments of faith.
Organized by the San Gennaro Parish, founded in 1914, the festival is part of the city's official calendar of events. The initiative concludes the cycle of Italian festivals in the city of São Paulo and is a strong attraction among Mooca residents and tourists alike.
More than 150 volunteers are working to prepare for the festival, which will take place on San Gennaro and Lins streets. The venue will be covered and have reinforced security. Opening hours are from 17 PM to 23 PM on Saturdays and from 17 PM to 22 PM on Sundays. Admission is free.
The public will be able to taste traditional dishes such as pizza, polenta, gnocchi, lasagna, fogazza, pork sandwiches, pepperoni and mortadella, as well as antipasti, barbecue, sweets and the famous 'mammas' spaghetti, offered with sugo, pepperoni or puttanesca sauces.
Children also have a turn with inflatable toys scattered throughout the party.
Canteen and religious program
Inside the parish warehouse, the San Gennaro Cantina operates, with paid admission and exclusive programming. Tickets cost R$75 on Saturdays and R$50 on Sundays. Children under 5 are free; ages 6 to 12 pay half price.
The entrance fee includes a plate of spaghetti, a slice of pizza, and a portion of bruschetta. The canteen is open from 18 PM to 23 PM on Saturdays, and from 18 PM to 22 PM on Sundays, with live music from the Banda Itália Brasil, traditional dances, and raffles. Reservations must be made in advance at the parish office.
Religious celebrations will take place on September 16, 17, 18 and 19, always at 19 pm, at the church located at Rua da Mooca, 950. On Sunday, the 21st, a solemn mass will be held at 9 am, followed by a procession through the neighborhood.
A Feast of San Gennaro It also fulfills a social role. The income raised funds the parish's projects, which provide meals, food baskets, and hygiene kits to homeless people and vulnerable families.
