Transhumance ritual was repeated in Lecco: thousands of sheep crossed 9 cities
The ancient practice of transhumance was celebrated once again. In Lecco, on Saturday morning (23), just before seven, a parade with more than 3 thousand sheep headed towards the pastures of Valsassina, in the Lombardy Alps.
The ritual is awaited every year by residents. And many woke up very early so as not to miss this spectacle of ancient origins, a pastoral practice that Unesco, last November, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Transhumance is the seasonal movement of herds to locations that offer better conditions during part of the year.
Yesterday, divided into three flocks, the sheep – accompanied by their various shepherds and tireless dogs that guide them – left San Michele di Galbiate, passed through nine cities, heading to the pastures of Valsassina, where they will spend the summer and then resume their journey in September.
