crop should increase between 10% and 15% compared to 2017
In this extraordinarily hot summer, the grape harvest could not be so great. According to preliminary information from the UIV – Italian Wine Union –, the harvest it should increase between 10% and 15% compared to 2017. “We can call this the golden year for Italian wine”, said Paolo Castelletti, general secretary of the entity.
But the forecast is not just in quantity, but in the quality of the final product. According to Castelletti, The decisive factor will be the climatic trend of the coming weeks of August: regular ripening of the grapes is a necessary condition, not only for volumes, but also for achieving adequate development of the sugar and acid level and an aromatic framework.

With an estimated harvest of 47 million to 49 million hectoliters in 2018, Italy intends to maintain its world record production, further distancing itself from its main competitors such as France – with its 36 million hectoliters of wine – and Spain – with its 35,5 million hectoliters of wine produced annually.
The official data for the 2018 harvest forecasts will be announced on September 4th in Rome, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Tourism.
