O Court of Venice faces a significant legal challenge in dealing with an extraordinary amount of Applications for recognition of Italian citizenship.
The situation became more intense due to a reform in civil procedure that modified jurisdiction for cases involving foreigners seeking recognition of their Italian citizenship.
According to the president of the Court of Venice, Salvatore Laganà, approximately 17.000 actions were filed in just 15 months, resulting in a veritable avalanche of cases to be dealt with.
Laganà revealed that the vast majority of these requests are made up of Brazilian citizens, while Argentines and Venezuelans represent a minority. “I would say that 99% of them are Brazilian citizens,” said the president to the newspaper Il Gazzettino.

This situation has become a monumental challenge for the judicial system, leading to the implementation of extraordinary measures to deal with the overload. Laganà expressed his concerns about the explosion of requests and reported discussions with the Ministers of the Interior and Justice, Matteo Piantedosi and Carlo Nordio, respectively. “It is no coincidence that I have already talked about this with the ministers,” he said.
Overestimation
According to him, the complexity of the situation is aggravated by the large number of requests involving entire families. “It’s necessary to consider that often there isn’t just one applicant per process, but entire families, with 15 to 20 people, which means we could be dealing with the recognition of Italian citizenship for 200.000 people,” said Laganà. An exaggerated estimate, of course.
To face this scenario, President Laganà said he took the initiative to recruit additional honorary judges in order to speed up the processing of requests. “I have recruited additional honorary judges to help with this activity, with the aim of holding as many hearings as possible,” he said. According to him, in one year, more than 1.500 cases have already been resolved.
The Veneto region plays a crucial role in this migratory context, increasing the urgency of this challenge.
Italianism is cited
The newspaper Il Gazzettino again mentioned the Italianism portal as a source in the article, especially when referring to the surname “Bolsonaro”, which appears repeatedly in the archives accumulated in the Court of Venice.

The article notes that, “if information released by the Brazilian portal Italianismo If confirmed, indicating that the former leader of the Brazilian government, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, has initiated legal proceedings to obtain Italian citizenship (following applications submitted by his sons Flávio and Eduardo), this will not surprise the judges and officials of the specialized immigration section, who already handle appeals from other descendants of the Bolzonaro family of Padua.
